Highland Barbecue & Work Bee
Dundonald Farm, Three Rivers, Michigan
May 22, 2004
Midwest Highland breeders enjoyed good food and good times at this summer's
first Highland Barbeque, held at Dundonald Farm, Three Rivers, Michigan, on Saturday,
May 22. This was an impromptu event set up just a few days in advance. Members
were contacted by e-mail and telephone.
Organizers Valerie See (Fieldstone Farm) and Mary Van
Antwerp (Wild Rose Meadows) set up this Highland Barbecue and Old Fashioned Work
Bee to help Eddie Mackay get Dundonald Farm ready for summer. Eddie is
recovering from cancer surgery, and doing nicely, but won't be able to resume
normal activities until next fall at the earliest. And if you don't know by now,
Eddie has a nice herd of beautiful Highland cattle - this was a great excuse to
go see them again!
Dogs had stampeded part of Eddie's herd through a woven
wire fence, requiring extensive repair. His flower beds needed weeding, there
were trays of new flowers to plant, a trailer load of wood needed unloading, and
a severe storm the night before the barbecue broke a lot of branches and knocked
some trees down. Area Highland breeders showed up on Saturday morning with
tools, smiles, lawn chairs, and a dish to pass. Every job on the list was done
by 2 pm, the grill sizzled with tasty Highland beef, and a table full of food
assured that nobody went away hungry!
Here are a few pictures from this season's first Barbecue
and Work Bee:

Gracious host, grateful recipient of the
generosity of Midwest Highland Cattle Association members. Eddie has given
so much to the MWHCA and Midwest Juniors that it was a pleasure to give
something back! |
