Frostproof Yard Hydrant Freezes Up

This advanced hydrant system was installed at a cost of $475 after the farm received a citation from the Health Dept for having an "unapproved" hydrant. Old fashioned red frost-free hydrants are legal to sell in Michigan, they are illegal to install.

This sanitary frostproof yard hydrant is manufactured by Campbell Manufacturing Inc. of Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania. It features a canister below the frostline that collects the water that remains in the pipe after the water is turned off.

This particular hydrant meets Health Dept guidelines, but it simply does not work. It freezes any time the temperature drops below freezing. Additionally, the top of the hydrant has leaked since the day it was installed.

The hydrant still leaks and still  freezes in the ground even though it is enclosed in a double-wall, insulated house heated with a 500 watt infrared heater.
